Make way for Taft!

Make way for Taft!

A desk has a sign above it: “Announce yourself NOT a candidate here without a delay.” Below are two papers: “Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for or accept another nomination. Signed, Theodore Roosevelt” and “I have not been a candidate for anything but the confidence of the people. xxxx George B. Cortelyou.” There is a map of North and South America, a telephone, and several books, including “Bears I have met,” “Santiago and way stations,” and “More bears.”

Cartoonist Harold R. Coffman, later one of William Randolph Hearst’s “relief pitchers” on his chain’s art staffs, illustrating features and drawing occasional editorial cartoons in place of Winsor McCay, contributed clever elements to this drawing. “Make Way For Taft!” managed to say much about the breaking news story without picturing a single figure.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Carl Ethan Akeley

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Carl Ethan Akeley

President Roosevelt thanks Carl Ethan Akeley for the letter and model of the elephant’s head that Akeley sent him. Roosevelt will also gladly accept the table that Akeley offered Roosevelt, and asks if Akeley would send it care of Emil Boas of the Hamburg-American Line. Roosevelt looks forward to hearing about Akeley’s plans for his own trip, and he will certainly try to get the elephants that Akeley mentioned if they are there and he is able to do so.

Carl Ethan Akeley tells President Roosevelt that he has sent him a model of an elephant head instead of sending drawings and photographs as he had previously promised. Akeley has also made Roosevelt a camp table that he would like to send him, and asks where he can send it. Akeley plans to write to Roosevelt again in a few days about his trip to British East Africa and the elephant group for the American Museum of Natural History.
