He knows Derby well and will vouch for his character. Derby has done excellent agricultural work in North Carolina and his letter should also be considered.

President Roosevelt is glad that Oliver D. Filley understood his situation. He invites Filley and Roger Alden Derby to lunch if there is anything they wish to discuss, and offers to invite Assistant Secretary of State Robert Bacon as well. Roosevelt emphasizes that the invitation should not be treated as mandatory, especially if it is inconvenient for them to come.

Letter from Oliver D. Filley to Theodore Roosevelt

Oliver D. Filley explains to President Roosevelt what has been done to try to arrange a race between the crew teams of Harvard and Cambridge. Filley feared it would be impossible for Roosevelt to act in any unofficial way, and that his writing might put the Englishmen in a position where they could not refuse with grace if they could not arrange a match. However, Roosevelt’s letter of support was greatly appreciated.
