Six of the ten pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” column are devoted to the visit of a delegation from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to the Netherlands in October 1989. The TRA, for the first time, held its annual meeting and dinner outside of the United States. The column notes the group’s visit to various sites across the Netherlands, describes the activities of the Roosevelt Study Center, and discusses fundraising efforts to support the Center. The column also discusses efforts to increase the endowment for the TRA and to establish an endowment for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University.

The column is illustrated with fifteen photographs from the TRA’s visit to the Netherlands and two more from the fundraising dinner held to support the endowment of the Roosevelt collection at Harvard.

This four page edition of “News and Notes” is divided into six sections and is mostly concerned with a series of celebrations and commemorations of the 125th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. The article details the celebrations held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in New York State in New York City, Oyster Bay, and Buffalo, and at Harvard University. The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace hosted events as did the American Museum of Natural History. Oyster Bay held a parade while the Indianapolis gathering saw the planting of a tree at the home of Roosevelt’s Vice President, Charles W. Fairbanks. The meeting at the American Museum of Natural History saw the awarding of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to four recipients. A dinner was held in Buffalo while at Harvard, John Morton Blum gave a lecture.

The article also discusses the 1983 Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public high schools held at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, and it details the premiere of the documentary film The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. “News and Notes” closes with an obituary for Helen M. MacLachlan who worked for both the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the National Park Service at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace in New York City.

John A. Gable provides a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in 1979. He details the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall in Georgia, Youngs Memorial Cemetery and the adjacent Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary in Oyster Bay, and the American Museum of Natural History. Gable also reports on the association’s support of student essay and speaking contests, additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project. He closes with an assertion that the United States is “in the midst of what can be called a ‘Roosevelt revival'” given the rise in membership of the TRA and the publication of a number of significant works on Roosevelt in 1979, most significantly Edmund Morris’s The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

Gable opens this edition of the “News and Notes” column by quoting extensively from an article in Psychohistory Review by Kathleen Dalton that addresses why Theodore Roosevelt was so popular with the American people. He talks about Roosevelt related gatherings in Buffalo, New York, Tampa, Florida, and Harvard University, and he notes the winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Essay Contest at Long Island University. Gable notes one of his recent speaking engagements and closes with a further endorsement of Frederick W. Marks’s study of Roosevelt’s diplomacy, Velvet on Iron.

Harvard University recently held a symposium on May 9, 1980 to mark the one hundred year anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s graduation from Harvard. The article notes the order of the proceedings and it provides brief background information on each of the three speakers–Barbara Tuchman, David McCullough and Edmund Morris–and lists their books and literary awards. A listing of some of the attendees from Harvard, the Roosevelt family, and the Theodore Roosevelt Association concludes the article.

He notes the growth in membership and dues for the TRA, and he details the assistance the TRA has given to numerous scholars and writers and lists the publications that have emerged from their work. Article that announces the annual meeting for 1978 of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection Committee which oversees the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University. The article lists the members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association that serve on the committee, provides an update on the additions and contributions made to the collection, and lists the names of the individuals and organizations that made the donations. The article also says that a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt painted by George Burroughs Torrey at the White House had been donated to Harvard by Dr. Adelbert Ames. The article closes with a history of the Roosevelt Collection from 1919 to 1978.

Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) John A. Gable provides an update on the various projects undertaken by the TRA in 1976 with an emphasis on the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt holdings at Harvard University. He notes the establishment there of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, and he gives an update on the revitalization project underway in the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site in New York City. Gable promotes the reissue of Roosevelt’s biography of Gouverneur Morris, and he lists the various clubs and organizations he spoke to in his role as Executive Director of the TRA. He notes the receipt of four letters from Roosevelt to William T. Hornaday which the TRA has added to the Harvard University Roosevelt Collection.
