Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt greatly admires William P. Trent’s book and appreciates that it is dedicated to him. Roosevelt is converted to Trent’s views on Thomas Jefferson and Jefferson Davis, even though he does not entirely accept them. His main objection to Jefferson is “his utter inefficiency as an executive officer in the face of a foreign foe.”

Bishop Herbert Bury asks Theodore Roosevelt to accept the dedication of the American edition of his new book and includes a proposed version of the text. He is dedicating the English edition to Bishop of London Arthur F. Winnington Ingram. Bury wants to his book to draw attention to the religious needs of Central America, “that important part of America’s sphere of influence.”

James H. McClintock is glad that Theodore Roosevelt will be able to come dedicate the dam in Maricopa County, as he helped make its construction possible. McClintock shares his memory of the beginning of the construction of the dam, and how he and several others were involved with surveying locations and providing a recommendation. While the remaining members of the “Arizona squadron” of the Rough Riders will be in attendance, McClintock laments how their numbers have dwindled.
