President Roosevelt asks Lucien Hugh Alexander to ask Senator Philander C. Knox to take up the matter of the removal of James Wilson’s remains. He liked Alexander’s and Dartmouth president William Jewett Tucker’s addresses. He offered the vacancy to Senator Knox, but he declined it. Roosevelt believes that out of everyone in the country, Secretary of War William H. Taft is most fit to be a judge.

The Republican Party and the country benefited from the work of Senator Hanna and his death is “very sad.” The Panama treaty appears set to pass and the cooperation with Germany on securing the neutrality of China was a success.

Marcus Alonzo Hanna has died. President Roosevelt describes him as a “strong personality, with many large and generous traits.” Roosevelt appreciates the information regarding England’s views on the Yang-tso valley. Germany has acted well and Russia was astonishingly unprepared.

The Senate ceremonies at Marcus Alonzo Hanna’s funeral were impressive and President Roosevelt was touched by Senator Frye’s final sentence.

Marcus Alonzo Hanna’s death was a tragedy. He had many “large and generous traits.” Near the end, Hanna sent Roosevelt a note that showed him at his best. Roosevelt recently had lunch with Buffalo Bill. Granville Fortescue is working to get sent to Korea in order to see the fighting of the Russo-Japanese War. Roosevelt agrees that a West Point education would be good for Ted Roosevelt, just like it would be good for anyone, but he believes that Ted has too much potential to enter the army.
