Letter from Charles H. Davis to Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt has been invited to address the African Americans of Atlanta while he is in town to speak to the Southern Commercial Congress on March 9. President William H. Taft will address the same people on March 10. Various prominent men from Atlanta have endorsed the idea of Roosevelt giving a speech, and Charles H. Davis hopes that Roosevelt will agree.

Pan-American mail steamers

President William H. Taft recently corresponded with Grosvenor Dawe of the Southern Commercial Congress regarding the establishment of a steamship company operating to South America, and the possibility of having one of their ships be the first to travel through the Panama Canal. Taft is glad people are taking steps to improve the United States’ merchant marine, and is sure if their efforts are successful they will be afforded all due privileges.

Taft expresses his delight, Roosevelt indorses the idea

The proposal to allow a ship from a recently established steamship company headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, to be the first American ship to pass through the Panama Canal has received widespread support from across the country, including from such prominent figures as Theodore Roosevelt and President William H. Taft.
