This edition of the “News and Notes” section opens with the somber news that three aircrew from the USS Theodore Roosevelt were lost in combat during Operation Desert Storm in February 1991. The section encourages members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to contribute to an education trust fund for the four children of the lost airmen. “News and Notes” also provides details about the various awards, grants and prizes conferred by the TRA and its associated organizations in the first half of 1991: Lawrence J. Sanders awards for essays in American history at the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands; natural history research grants from the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund at the American Museum of Natural History; Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools; the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize; and the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department. The latter report features a reprint of a story from the New York Times detailing the heroism of Police Officer Yolanda Lugo. The section also conveys the death of a National Park Service staffer at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site who died in a fire, and highlights the meeting of the Rough Riders reenactors group in Tampa, Florida.

“News and Notes” reports on the donation and delivery of six stained glass windows for the chapel onboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. The windows were donated by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and four religious denominations from Oyster Bay, New York, and feature scenes from the Bible and other religious themes. The section also notes the passing of Hamilton Fish who was a recent recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal. “News and Notes” provides a biography of Fish and remarks upon the other recent winners of the medal. Other topics covered include promotion of the TRA’s genealogy of the Roosevelt family; a text box “About the Theodore Roosevelt Association” that relays some of the history and mission of the TRA; a change in the leadership of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site; and an announcement that the next annual meeting of the TRA will be held at Bulloch Hall in Roswell, Georgia.

Photographs of three of the stained glass windows, as well as one of the carrier, join three photographs of Fish and a drawing of Theodore Roosevelt’s head as illustrations in the section.

This edition of “News and Notes” begins with a summary of the events, elections, and speeches at the seventy-first annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) which included the selection of Robert D. Dalziel as the twelfth President of the TRA. The report includes a listing of those elected to the Board of Trustees as well as brief biographies of the past presidents. “News and Notes” also details the conferring of annual awards and prizes supported by the TRA including: natural history research grants from the American Museum of Natural History; the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools; the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department; and the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. The section also notes the passing of Archibald B. Roosevelt, Junior, changes in command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and highlights a lecture by David McCullough at the White House on Theodore Roosevelt.

The “News and Notes” column describes John A. Gable’s teaching a course for the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands in July, 1988, and it also notes two of his other speaking engagements about Theodore Roosevelt. The column features an obituary for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Junior, son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who supported the work of the Roosevelt Study Center. “News and Notes” promotes new publications on Theodore Roosevelt, including the publication of past issues of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal in microfiche form by the Meckler corporation, and it lists some other sources for studying the life and work of Robert Barnwell Roosevelt. The use of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site as a voter registration site is also discussed.

Illustrations of the Roosevelt family coat of arms and both sides of the Theodore Roosevelt Association medallion appear in the column.

Roosevelt Study Center Opens In The Netherlands

John A. Gable provides a detailed report on the opening of the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands on September 19-20, 1986. Gable discusses the inaugural symposium held at the Center, listing the speakers and their topics, and he examines the genealogy of the Roosevelt family, looking at its roots in the Netherlands and the split of the family into the Hyde Park and Oyster Bay, New York, branches. Gable also touches on the purpose of the Center, to provide a European home for the study of American history, and he notes the various resources available to students and scholars. Gable also lists the members of the Roosevelt family and the Theodore Roosevelt Association who attended the opening and are involved in the Center’s administration.

 

Ten photographs supplement the text; seven show people at the opening of the reception with an emphasis on members of the Dutch government, and three show the exterior of the Center’s building, the Middelburg Abbey.

This edition of the “News and Notes” section opens with a report on the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). The report notes the election of new members and classes of the Board of Trustees and of the TRA’s leadership for 1985-1986. The section also covers the TRA’s involvement in the Outward Bound program and the granting of the first Theodore Roosevelt Scholarship for that program, the results of the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public high schools, and the passing of Philippa Jeffries Roosevelt. 

 

The section also covers the “first scholarship conference devoted entirely to TR” at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, which was held in October 1985. It also notes new works on Theodore Roosevelt, a panel on Roosevelt’s foreign policy to be held at the meeting of the Organization of American Historians, and highlights the work of Frederick W. Marks and Serge Ricard on Roosevelt’s diplomacy found in this issue. The section closes with a notice that Edmund Morris has signed a contract to write a biography of President Ronald Reagan.

The article describes the actions taken by McCormick which earned him the award and notes his service record with the NYPD. The section repeats in shortened form some of the information provided in other articles in the issue, looks at the various lectures and interviews given by John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, and notes personnel news from the various Roosevelt sites managed by the National Park Service.
