President Roosevelt believes it is unwise to give an interview to the newspaper. He agrees with William H. Taft’s opinion of the speeches given by J. S. Sherman and Secretary of State Elihu Root. Although he does not care for him, Roosevelt feels Governor Charles Evans Hughes should be renominated. Roosevelt wants Taft to show his personality and offers words of encouragement.

Herbert Parsons informs President Roosevelt that a few “fights” in the Republican organization at the primaries are very important, particularly in the First Assembly District. Parsons believes that Rocco Dalessandro is the better candidate for the party and notes that his brother, Antonio Dalessandro, is “the strongest republican amongst the Italians of the lower part of the city” and has done good work as chief watchman and immigrant inspector in New York. Parsons notes that Rocco’s opponents have leveled charges against Antonio, but Parsons does not believe them and encourages Roosevelt to go over the matter carefully if they are seriously entertained.

William H. Taft encloses a letter that is being sent out widely by General Solicitor of the Burlington Railroad James Blythe. Taft discusses the stops on his trip and writes that, based on the reception thus far, he feels the campaign will be a success even if there are still worries about the labor vote. Support for William Jennings Bryan appears to be waning after President Roosevelt’s swift attack. Taft has written to Treasurer of the Republican National Committee George Rumsey Sheldon about avoiding contributions from trust affiliates and instead soliciting businessmen across the country. The election is four weeks away, and Taft is anxious for the speeches and events that precede it.
