Roosevelt would like Attorney General Knox’s personal oversight of these cases, or at least some supervisory care.

Roosevelt states that he will see District Attorney George B. Curtiss if he has information regarding the case but not if his visit relates to the welfare of the party or Roosevelt’s success.

Charles J. Bonaparte and Holmes Conrad feel that the District Attorney should have laid the case before the Grand Jury. President Roosevelt would like to discuss the matter with Attorney General Knox and asks that Morgan Beach and Charles Henry Robb be invited to attend if possible.

President Roosevelt has heard that Idaho Governor Frank Robert Gooding has received contributions from mine owners to help in the prosecution of the alleged murderers of ex-Governor Frank Steunenberg, and tells Idaho Statesman owner Calvin Cobb that if this is true it would represent “the grossest impropriety.” The government must show that it is a neutral party and is not working on behalf of either the mine owners or the Western Federation of Miners. Roosevelt has previously condemned labor unions sending money to the accused, and just as strongly condemns capitalists sending in money to support the prosecution. He asks that Cobb show this letter to Gooding.

Lt. Gov. Woodruff explains to President Roosevelt comments made by Naval Officer Sharkey about Mr. McMackin, Commissioner of Labor, in a letter to Governor Benjamin B. Odell. In Woodruff’s opinion, Mr. McMackin had unfairly prosecuted some factory inspectors and Sharkey had reason to refer to “Mr. McMackin’s ‘vindictiveness.'”
