Andrew Jaritz sends Theodore Roosevelt a copy of an address he delivered before the U.S. Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce on the subject of business regulation. In November Jaritz sent Roosevelt an article titled “Business Caesar” and would appreciate hearing if Roosevelt received it. Jaritz is a student from Budapest, Hungary and has studied at New York University and Cornell University.

William N. Freeman thanks Frank Harper for his letter. He discusses a possible daily school exercise of a flag honor guard. He recalls a movement to assign a generic name to American soldiers, as British soldiers are called “Tommy Atkins”. He suggests “Johnny Trump”, and hopes that Roosevelt can endorse the idea. He would like to meet Roosevelt and give him a handshake.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to William Roscoe Thayer on the subject of criticism. Roosevelt feels that those who do are more aptly placed to be critics as to who do not, using the comparison that the authors of the Federalist were political doers who also criticized and acted. He then extends the metaphor to cover Harvard’s struggles in sports competitions with Yale and Cornell.

President Roosevelt tells Walter Camp that his son Ted wrote to both him and his mother that he was not unfairly targeted in the football game against Yale, and that the game was clean. In a postscript, Roosevelt describes his role in organizing a meeting between graduates of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William H. Taft

President Roosevelt tells Secretary of War Taft that it is nonsense for the army officers to complain about hot weather. He also thinks Taft is right about Ernest Stecker going out at once if he has accepted the Philippine Scouts commission, and Secretary Taft should handle the Philippines bulletin as he sees fit. In a postscript, Roosevelt asks Taft to look up the application of Jacob Gould Schurman and to see if he can put Arthur Harrison Wilson in the cavalry.

Telegram from Elon Huntington Hooker to L. M. Dennis

Elon Huntington Hooker tells L. M. Dennis that Theodore Roosevelt has received several hundred requests for addresses in the past month. Roosevelt visited Hooker’s home on Monday, but Hooker was unable to present Dennis’s request, although he is certain Roosevelt would have to decline. He is forwarding Dennis’s letter to Roosevelt’s secretary for a reply.
