Resolution by the representatives of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal regarding the treaty to end the Boer War. Although the delegates believe in their right to independence, they recognize the costs of the war in destruction of property and loss of life, and acknowledge that there is no prospect of victory. They therefore urge their respective governments to sign the treaty with Great Britain, in the interests of their peoples.

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Lodge agrees with President Roosevelt’s decision not to provide a letter of support for Lodge’s son-in-law, Augustus Peabody Gardner. Although Gardner’s campaign to keep his seat in Congress is not going well, others are doing what they can to support him. Lodge is also somewhat concerned about the Republican race for Governor of Massachusetts against John B. Moran. The Panama labor question is being used against many political candidates who voted with the administration. On another matter, it may be worthwhile for Secretary of War Taft to respond to James H. Blount, who has been making speeches about the Philippines which are harmful to the administration of the islands.

In the lion’s den

Charles Fletcher Lummis reflects on several topics in his column, “In the lion’s den.” Fletcher suggests that yellow journalism played a role in William McKinley’s assassination and praises the American people’s reaction to the assassination. Lummis is also thankful that President Roosevelt was there to lead the country after the tragedy. He concludes by suggesting American intervention in the South African War and thanking his readers for aiding the Mission Indians of Southern California.

Letter from Gerald C. Kitson to Theodore Roosevelt

Gerald C. Kitson has informed Ambassador Julian Pauncefote of President Roosevelt’s displeasure concerning British management of concentration camps during the South African War. He offers to send summaries of the various blue books regarding the war and assures Roosevelt that Joseph Chamberlain’s statement that “never has such a [significant] effort been made to minimize the horrors of war” is justified.
