President Roosevelt congratulates his son Kermit on his marks and says that Archie is not doing as well. Roosevelt talks about walking and swimming in Rock Creek Park and a visit from Douglas and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, whose son Stewart Douglas Robinson was expelled from Harvard.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Kermit Roosevelt

President Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit about his frustration with Ted cutting classes at Harvard and being put on probation. He compares Ted to the title character in William Thackeray’s novel Pendennis. Roosevelt does not think Ted will be able to go on the Mississippi River trip now. Roosevelt closes by saying that Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt is going to New York with Emily Tyler Carow. Kermit appears to have done some writing and drawing on the envelope.

Presley Marion Rixey has just returned from the Naval Training station in Chicago and the tubercular hospital in Colorado, and thanks President Roosevelt for giving the old fort to the Navy for such a purpose. Rixey has planned a one day fox hunt for Roosevelt and his daughter Ethel Roosevelt and hopes Roosevelt will not say no. Rixey asks Roosevelt to intercede in the case of West Point Cadet William J. Nalle, who was suspended from West Point for hazing, but only to do “what you consistently can.” Rixey wishes he could accompany Roosevelt on his upcoming African Safari, but fears he would be a hindrance.

Dean Hurlbut of Harvard College writes to President Roosevelt about the reported troubles and recent arrest of his son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Moran is turning it into a political matter, attempting to harm Roosevelt through his son, who was struck by the police when arrested. Francis R. Bangs and John Perkins will look after Theodore’s best interests. Hurlbut hopes the story comes to light and he apologizes for the president’s son’s poor treatment.

President Roosevelt informs Senator Culberson that he is already discussing the expulsion of cadet William J. Nalle from West Point with Secretary of War Luke E. Wright. Roosevelt finds that the case is entirely different from that of midshipman James M. Haralson, who was recently expelled from the Naval Academy. Nalle should be disciplined, but his career should not be ruined over it.

President Roosevelt has read Dean Hurlbut’s letter regarding Ted Roosevelt’s unexcused absence from Harvard University to the “harum-scarum individual.” Roosevelt explains that Ted has been recovering from injuries sustained from football and an elevator accident at home, as per his doctors’ advice. Roosevelt instructed Ted to write to Hurlbut, though Ted claims he already sent a letter. If there is anything else Roosevelt can do, Hurlbut should let him know.
