President Roosevelt relates to his son Theodore Roosevelt a humorous comment that Quentin made at breakfast. He praises Ted’s football performance so far in the season, but says that he and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt are glad that he will be done after next Saturday. He reminds Ted to write him about how he wants the moose horns, so that he can tell Alexander Lambert.

Alexander Lambert informs President Roosevelt that he has accepted an invitation from Surgeon General Robert M. O’Reilly to serve on a board to evaluate whether inoculations against typhoid should be given to soldiers in the army. Lambert asks if he might be able to stay with Roosevelt while he is in town. He additionally congratulates Roosevelt on the recent victory of Harvard’s football team over Yale, and mentions a pair of books that he thinks that Roosevelt may be interested in reading. Lambert recently saw Robert Harry Munroe Ferguson, and comments on his health.

Letter from Charles William Eliot to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles William Eliot, president of Harvard College, replies to President Roosevelt regarding several matters. The telegrams that Roosevelt sent him are correct, and Eliot regrets their publication, as it is the policy of Harvard College not to say anything about students being punished. Eliot discusses the punishment of Charles C. Morgan and Sidney W. Fish, as well as the events that brought about the necessity of punishing them. While Roosevelt thinks that their punishment–suspension from the Harvard crew team–was unjust, Eliot thinks it was deserved.

Harvard crew to row Cambridge in England

Harvard crew to row Cambridge in England

Arrangements for a crew competition between Harvard and Cambridge University have nearly been finalized. Frank L. Higginson and R. C. Lehmann have had the duties of representing Harvard’s interests in England, as both have previously been associated with the university. The race will be run purely for fun and for the sport of it, and will not be for any sort of international collegiate championship.

Ted Roosevelt would like to come visit John Campbell Greenway in the autumn after spending the summer with his family. He has been considering positions and wants to find work that really interests him. President Roosevelt is very busy with legislation and the upcoming convention. College football practice has started and Ted wants “one more chance at the old game.”
