Fourteen topics across eleven pages comprise this edition of the “News and Notes” section. The section covers some of the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s (TRA) annual awards, including police awards, and the public speaking contests in and around New York City. It highlights the passing of Sarah Alden Derby Gannett, a grand daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, author Michael Teague, and Teddie R. Bell Kaltenbacher, a girl famously named after Roosevelt. “News and Notes” also provides updates on the effort to secure Roosevelt the Medal of Honor, the schedule for the “Theodore Roosevelt: Icon of the American Century” exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery, and production of the index for volume XXII of the TRA Journal.

Six photographs, three from the police award ceremonies, two from the speaking contests, and one of the Gannett family, supplement the text.

Francis P. McManamon examines the origins of the Antiquities Act of 1906 that President Theodore Roosevelt and his successors used to safeguard natural and scientific sites across the United States. McManamon asserts that it was threats to ancient archaeological sites across the American Southwest that led to calls for greater government intervention, and he highlights the case of the Casa Grande ruins in Arizona. McManamon notes the work of private organizations, government agencies, individuals, and members of Congress, most importantly Congressman John F. Lacey of Iowa, who worked to save important sites before the passage of the Antiquities Act. McManamon traces the slow path to passage of the Antiquities Act, and he highlights its important text and provisions. He notes how Roosevelt used the act to set aside eighteen national monuments, and he asserts that Roosevelt’s actions, especially in regards to the Grand Canyon of Arizona, set important precedents for his successors, especially President Bill Clinton.

Tweed Roosevelt recounts his role, beginning in the fall of 1998, to secure the Medal of Honor for Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt admits that he was initially skeptical about the effort, but he decided to volunteer and became a lobbyist to secure passage of the necessary enabling legislation. Roosevelt highlights the various members of the House and Senate who helped secure the bill’s passage, highlighting the roles of Congressmen Rick A. Lazio, Paul F. McHale, Steven E. Buyer, and especially, Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota. He also notes how the bill’s passage was threatened by the impeachment proceedings swirling around President Bill Clinton. Roosevelt describes several White House visits, including meetings with Clinton and President George W. Bush.

Twelve photographs appear in the article, nine of which include Tweed Roosevelt, and three each featuring Clinton and Bush. A Frederic Remington painting, a letter, and two documents related to the conferral of the Medal of Honor also accompany the article.

This edition of “News & Notes” opens with the announcement that a conference scheduled to mark the centennial of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency had been cancelled because of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The section notes that the long awaited second volume of a biography of Roosevelt by Edmund Morris was scheduled for release in November 2001 and that Sylvia Jukes Morris’s biography of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt was to be reissued in paperback. “News & Notes” highlights Roosevelt’s induction into the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon, the conferring of a historic preservation award to the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), and the announcement of the winners of the TRA’s Rose Award. Obituaries for Tilly DeVries and Lion DeVries of the TRA and a summary of this issue’s book reviews complete the section.

David Sarasohn describes how both Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton looked to Theodore Roosevelt for inspiration and as someone to emulate. Sarasohn also asserts that Roosevelt’s reputation has risen in recent decades because Roosevelt seems perfectly suited to the modern age of politics with its emphasis on images and sound bites, both of which Roosevelt mastered in his own time.

Report on the presentation of Theodore Roosevelt’s Medal of Honor by Tweed Roosevelt to President George W. Bush for permanent display at the White House. The report notes the long effort to secure the medal for Colonel Roosevelt, and it lists some of the key members of Congress who helped secure legislation enabling the conferring of the medal. The report notes the national tour made by Roosevelt’s medal, and it highlights the remarks made by Tweed Roosevelt and Bush at the ceremony. It lists the twenty-two members of the Roosevelt family and sixteen members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association who attended the White House ceremony.

Report on the successful effort to pass legislation authorizing President Bill Clinton to award the Medal of Honor to Theodore Roosevelt for his actions at the Battle of San Juan Hill, July 1, 1898. The report highlights the diligent efforts of Congressmen Paul F. McHale and Rick A. Lazio to pass the legislation in the House of Representatives and notes the work of Senators Kent Conrad and Robert C. Smith in the Senate. The report also notes the lobbying efforts of the membership of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, in particular that of Tweed Roosevelt, and it details the opposition of the U.S. Army to the conferring of the medal.

This edition of “News and Notes” covers a variety of topics such as the conferral of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize and the results of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) Public Speaking Contests. The section also notes the seventy-fifth anniversary of the death of Theodore Roosevelt and the birth of the TRA, and it highlights the naming of a new commanding officer for the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Updates on Pine Knot, the TRA Journal indexing, and the need for volunteers at both Sagamore Hill and the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace are noted. An obituary for Grace Green Roosevelt McMillian also appears in the section.

Buildings connected to Theodore Roosevelt make up much of this edition of the “News and Notes” section. The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) acquired Roosevelt’s presidential retreat in Virginia, Pine Knot, and the federal government renamed the building housing the Office of Personnel Management the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building. “News and Notes” also highlights the premiere of a PBS documentary on the 1992 Rio Roosevelt Expedition; discusses the foreign policy focus of this issue TRA Journal; and notes the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.

Seventeen topics compete for attention in the ten pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” section. The restoration of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site by the National Park Service and the acquisition of Theodore Roosevelt’s rustic retreat, Pine Knot, by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) receive extensive coverage. The section also highlights the ninetieth anniversary of the establishment of Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and the visit by President Bill Clinton to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

“News and Notes” covers the various student awards and contests sponsored by the TRA as well as the natural history research grants given by the American Museum of Natural History. The section also provides information about the Woman’s Roosevelt Memorial Association and defends Roosevelt’s stance on women’s issues. An article by Bill Bleyer about the restoration of Sagamore Hill is reprinted in “News and Notes” along with a letter from a TRA member who complains about the glorification of Roosevelt in the pages of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal.
