Fred C. Ainsworth, Adjutant General of the United States Army, writes to Assistant Secretary of War Oliver regarding the Army service record of Leonard Wilson under General Joseph Wheeler. Although General Wheeler’s report has not been found, several people have attested to Wilson’s effectiveness.

President Roosevelt asks the United States Civil Service Commission when the classification of the laborers employed as clerks will be ready, as he wishes to take up the matter. Laborers have previously been classified, and the reason to not classify the laborers employed as clerks has disappeared.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt informs Edward Charles O’Brien that he did not believe Mr. Daly was as competent a clerk as the others. Following an outburst by Daly, Roosevelt recommended he be demoted, but Daly preferred to quit his position as clerk.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt calls Secretary of the Navy Long’s attention to E. I. Renick’s case. Renick was a former chief clerk of the Department of State who rose through his career under the civil service regulations. In the past, chief clerks who were turned out at no fault of their character were given another position. Roosevelt suggests that Renick be transferred to a clerkship at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Norman V. McLeod recalls in detail the positive experiences he had during the six months he spent in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Because he was not needed at the camp in Medora, North Dakota, McLeod spent two weeks there and was then transferred to northern Minnesota. McLeod reflects on the impacts the CCC had on him, the training he received, and the people with whom he worked. McLeod also includes a short note with more information on the two weeks he spent in Medora, and returns the letter sent to him with the questionnaire with a short note on it as well.
