Richard Watson Gilder’s friend, Frederic Lawrence Knowles, has written a poem about the Booker T. Washington “incident” which Gilder had promised to show President Roosevelt. Gilder also encloses an editorial and reports that the civil service session in Boston was complimentary to Roosevelt.

Charles Noble Gregory is a Theodore Roosevelt supporter and discusses why he believes Roosevelt is a viable candidate compared to President McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. He asks that Roosevelt not make any decisions to jeopardize his candidacy should McKinley not run for reelection or not be selected to run.

Carl Schurz has contacted President-Elect Grover Cleveland about Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt’s desire to meet with him. Based on Cleveland’s response, Schurz expresses his hope that Roosevelt will be retained in his position on the Civil Service Commission.

James Bryce asks Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt for information on Civil Service Reform for a new edition of his book, The American Commonwealth. Bryce asks specifically about the total number of offices included in the Pendleton Act, and the total number of places in the Federal Civil Service. In addition, Bryce hopes Roosevelt will remind “[Henry Cabot] Lodge of his promise to take steps to have an official publication of State Constitutions, in continuation of [Benjamin Perley] Poore’s Collection.”
