Letter from Jacob Trieber to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Jacob Trieber to Theodore Roosevelt

Jacob Trieber agrees with Theodore Roosevelt’s statement in his recent article in The Outlook regarding anti-trust laws and the need for a federal administrative body, similar to the Interstate Commerce Commission, to oversee interstate industrial business. Trieber has served as a federal judge for twelve years and knows first hand that judges do not have the time to thoroughly review the large industrial concerns. Trieber suggests a commission devoted to considering these matters with the Court of Commerce to review the commission’s decisions and asks why it couldn’t be done.

Letter from Emory Speer to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Emory Speer to Theodore Roosevelt

Judge Speer encloses a list of United States judges who will likely be appointed by Democratic nominee William Jennings Bryan. He explains to President Roosevelt the ramifications of having Bryan potentially nominating a large number of justices to federal courts at various levels. The Bryan judges would likely jeopardize peonage laws and the Employers Liability Act, among other things. Democrat-appointed judges would shift jurisprudence to favor states’ rights over federal authority.
