President Roosevelt congratulates Lawrence F. Abbott and his wife Winifred Buck Abbott on their automobile and wishes he could have attended the fair. Since he is writing for Scribner’s Magazine while in Africa, Roosevelt does not think he should write anything for The Outlook. He will, however, accumulate materials to write about for The Outlook at a later time. He recommends both Lawrence F. Abbott and Lyman Abbott read Holman Day’s article on prohibition, which he says shows the need for a local option.

President Roosevelt has written a statement about his association with Scribner’s Magazine during his upcoming African safari as requested by Robert Bridges, but requests Bridges be vague about the exact itinerary and timing of the trip, so as to avoid unwanted followers in the field, and asks that Bridges emphasize that the trip is associated with the National Museum of Natural History. Roosevelt emphasizes that his work with The Outlook magazine will in no way conflict with his work for Scribner’s.

Roosevelt feels obligated to enjoy a series of essays by Westerlick because his wife, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, assumes he would not care for them; the puzzling problem of the re-nomination for Charles Evans Hughes for governor of New York; the plans for Roosevelt’s upcoming African safari, and his desire to tour Europe on the way home as a private citizen without pomp; his plans to write for Scribner’s and The Outlook post-presidency, and his reasoning for selecting those offers.

President Roosevelt tells Caspar Whitney, editor of Outing Magazine, that his name should have been on the “roll of honor,” a mistake Roosevelt plans to rectify in his next volume of speeches and messages. Roosevelt also explains that his statements about naturalist William J. Long appeared in Everybody’s Magazine because the reporter feels as strongly about the material as Roosevelt himself. The president notes that other magazines are “old friends,” but Whitney has no idea of the requests he receives to write articles in magazines.

Robert Bridges reassures President Roosevelt that he does not need to hurry in writing the appendix for his book Outdoor Pastimes. It might be advisable to put the appendix in a new edition in order to draw attention to it. Roosevelt may make the appendix as elaborate as he wishes.

Robert Bridges of Charles Scribner’s Sons sends President Roosevelt a sample of the type to be used in printing his latest manuscript Outdoor Pastimes. Charles Scribner’s Sons plans to make the book very fine with gilt pages and the first edition will cost three dollars.

Robert Bridges from Charles Scribner’s Sons sends President Roosevelt a check in payment for the serialization of two articles. Bridges also sends magazine proofs and will send a sample of a book manuscript in a few days. He asks Roosevelt who should be credited concerning illustrations and photographs. Bridges also congratulates the president on his speech at Harvard which was a “great delight.”

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to congratulate him on having his article “The sheep of the desert” published. He says if he has any success on his trip to New Brunswick to write about it and then it can be sent to Scribners or National Geographic Magazine. In his post-script, Roosevelt asks Kermit what he wants to do with prints from the negatives of the Africa trip that were sent by Scribners.
