Roosevelt outlines his optimism about the campaign, but admits that New York may be difficult and that he has received a worried letter from Representative Theodore E. Burton about Ohio. Roosevelt does not plan on speaking, other than potentially on labor, and he asks for William H. Taft’s input on postmaster appointments.

President Roosevelt informs Secretary of War Taft that he has ordered Robert M. McWade’s removal as Consul General in Canton, China. Roosevelt understands Harry Taft’s decision to decline nomination for governor of Pennsylvania and thinks it was proper. Roosevelt agrees with Taft about Henry Allen Cooper, and hopes Taft will look favorably upon John Campbell’s appointment to a judgeship in the inferior court.

William H. Taft has just returned from an extensive speaking tour in the West and reports to President Roosevelt that on the whole he thinks it went over very well. He is intending not to campaign, but mostly to drum up enthusiasm and excitement. Taft also discusses at length the political situation in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. He intends to travel next through the South, stopping in Washington, D.C. before returning to Ohio. Taft is optimistic about the campaign and feels that Roosevelt’s letters to William Jennings Bryan have helped immensely.
