Former Armour Packing Company General Manager Miles writes to President Roosevelt regarding the case of the beef trust versus the government. Miles brings up a past meeting he had with Roosevelt in which Roosevelt agreed to support Miles in his vow to help the government seek compliance concerning the meat packing industry. However, Miles notes that he would not take part in the punishment regarding Armour meat packers’ violations. Miles suggests that he is reluctant to testify in the case but is willing to supply information.

President Roosevelt is glad that Silas McBee liked what he said about Judge J. Otis Humphrey and his decision in the beef trust case. Roosevelt feels that Humphrey did “a cruel wrong” in using a technicality to issue a decision in favor of the trusts, instead of ruling on principles and in favor of the population more generally.

President Roosevelt tells Otto Gresham that he believes the recent decision in the beef trust court case to be bad law, and that “from the moral and social standpoint it was a blow to righteousness in the community.” Roosevelt believes Commissioner of Corporations James Rudolph Garfield and Attorney General William H. Moody acted well throughout the trial.
