Theodore Roosevelt National Park Historian Mattison confirms receipt of Professor Taylor’s report, “Archeological Investigations of the Elkhorn Ranch Site.” Mattison also informs Taylor that Paul L. Beaubien, who had performed earlier excavations on the site, has passed away.

Acting Regional Director Baggley responds to a request regarding the status of the report on the archaeological investigations undertaken at Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park. Baggley relays a letter from Professor Dee Calderwood Taylor who oversaw the excavations. Taylor states that while he had been busy teaching classes recently, he plans to finish the report by September.

Acting Regional Director M. H. Harvey acknowledges receipt of a memorandum related to purchasing items for the archaeological expedition to the Elkhorn Ranch site. Harvey advises issuing a work order detailing the anticipated expenditures. An account will be established once such a work order is received.

Regional Director Baker writes to National Park Service Director Wirth to respond to an earlier memorandum from Acting Chief of Interpretation John E. Doerr. The earlier memo expressed concern over the scheduling of Regional Archaeologist Paul L. Beaubien, as he was moving from project to project without having enough time to finish any of them. Baker seeks to explain the reason for this, and gives an assessment of the priorities and costs relating to the Elkhorn Ranch project. A proposal is being developed for a fuller investigation of the Elkhorn Ranch site.

This map depicts the areas of the Elkhorn Ranch site that were excavated during the investigations of 1957 and 1959, including the ranch house, corral, chicken pen, utility shed, well, and stable, as well as blacksmith shop and dugout. A zoomed out view shows the unit’s position relative to the surrounding area. The map also presents a brief description of the two archeological excavations that took place.

This report details a number of proposals for developing the Elkhorn Ranch site as a part of Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park. Following a brief description of the site’s history and reasoning for the site’s preservation, plans for the development of the site are described, to make the area accessible and understandable to visitors. Maps and photographs are included along with the text.

Superintendent Thompson of Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park reports to Regional Director Fagergren that the excavations at the Elkhorn Ranch site by Paul L. Beaubien and Dee Calderwood Taylor have amassed a large number of artifacts. Before these artifacts are cataloged, they need to be culled, but the park’s budget will not allow for hiring a qualified worker to do this. He hopes that the Park Service as a whole can help.
