Masonic Children Return

Masonic Children Return

Newspaper article reporting on the concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Masonic Home of Utica which consisted of professional performers as well as children from the home dancing and performing music. The concert raised over $5,000 for the Masonic Home and the children enjoyed their trip to New York City. Letters received by William J. Wiley, superintendent of the home, are also printed.

Saint Patrick’s day in Washington

President Roosevelt rides on an elephant and leads a Saint Patrick’s Day parade featuring the “G.O.P. band,” which includes Secretary of War William H. Taft, Speaker of the House Joseph Gurney Cannon, Pennsylvania Senator Philander C. Knox, Secretary of State Elihu Root, Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks, and Secretary of the Treasury Leslie M. Shaw. The parade has a banner with a three-leaf clover that has words in each leaf: “anti-rail-road rebate,” “Philippine tariff moderation,” and “Panama Canal—no grafting.” Roosevelt holds a “Spanish-American War” sword.

Letter from Martha Macomb Flandrau Selmes to Theodore Roosevelt

Martha Macomb Flandrau Selmes has heard about Secretary of War William H. Taft’s nomination as Republican candidate for President, and is glad that President Roosevelt has secured his legacy. Selmes has received a letter from Walter Howard Loving, leader of the Manila Constabulary band, and asks if there is any way that his wish for his band to play at the presidential inauguration could be fulfilled. She praises Loving highly, and says that allowing this could help race relations, both with African-Americans in the United States, but also regarding the Philippines and Filipinos.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Martha Macomb Flandrau Selmes

President Roosevelt hopes to have Martha Macomb Flandrau Selmes over to dinner sometime so that they can have a satisfactory talk. Roosevelt has forwarded Selmes’s letter to Secretary of War Taft, and says that if he wins the election Roosevelt believes they can get the Manila Constabulary Band to come play. He says that Taft would like to hear from Selmes, as she was the wife of his old friend Tilden Russell Selmes.

Silent color film showing the dedication of Theodore Roosevelt’s home, Sagamore Hill, as a national shrine on June 14, 1953. Speakers at the dedication include President Dwight D. Eisenhower, former President Herbert Hoover, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey, and Leonard W. Hall, Chair of the Republican National Committee. Also present at the dedication were singer William Warfield, members of the Roosevelt family, representatives of scouting troops, and a brass band.
