Theodore Roosevelt tells Tracy I. Storer, assistant curator of birds at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at Berkeley, that he thinks Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Vernon Bailey, Florence Merriam Bailey, George Shiras, and Edward William Nelson could write a “monumental” and “genuine” natural history of land vertebrates in North America.

Theodore Roosevelt believes he was correct about the passenger pigeons he saw. He includes evidence in the form of a letter written by Joseph Wilmer, whose place Plain Dealing is near Roosevelt’s Pine Knot. Roosevelt also includes an excerpt from George Shiras discussing various topics, including the timber wolf and how lynx hunt, and disagreeing with William J. Long’s texts on the subjects.

C. Hart Merriam sends President Roosevelt information he requested about the Biological Survey for use in Roosevelt’s message to Congress. Merriam just returned from a trip along the Mexican boundary. He learned that the Desert Bighorn is still common in the Colorado desert and that the mule deer sticks to the desert.

Executive Director John A. Gable gives a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) during 1978. He notes an increase in both membership and contributions, and details the day-to-day work of answering phone and letter inquiries about Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to covering aspects of established programs like the student essay and speaking contests and support of research grants made by the American Museum of Natural History, he details the programs surrounding the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sagamore Hill as a public house museum, the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall, the home of Roosevelt’s mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, in Roswell, Georgia, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project.
