Forgotten fragments (#13): Save the Elkhorn Ranch

Forgotten fragments (#13): Save the Elkhorn Ranch

Tweed Roosevelt describes a visit to the White House in which he and members of his family met President Barack Obama. Roosevelt notes that he took the opportunity to ask Obama to consider declaring the Elkhorn Ranch site in North Dakota a national monument to protect it from the encroachments of the oil industry in the Badlands. Roosevelt quotes a long passage from Theodore Roosevelt’s writing about the ranch site, and he highlights the two most immediate threats to the area, proposals for a bridge across the Little Missouri River and a gravel mine. Roosevelt says that the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) must act to save the site that was so important to Theodore Roosevelt and the American conservation movement.

Four photographs and an illustration, including one each of the Elkhorn Ranch site, supplement the text.

Book reviews

Book reviews

The “Book Review” section features two works that examine aspects of Theodore Roosevelt’s outdoor life. Michael L. Manson finds that the third edition of R.L. Wilson’s Theodore Roosevelt: Hunter-Conservationist deals mostly with Roosevelt’s use of, fondness for, and collection of firearms. Manson praises contributions to the work by Lowell E. Baier and John Milius, and he finds the book beautiful with its many photographs and illustrations. Becoming Teddy Roosevelt highlights the friendship between Roosevelt and William Wingate Sewall who would mentor, tutor, and guide a young Roosevelt in the woods of Maine and who would try his hand as a cowboy on Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch.

The section features illustrations of both books’ covers along with an advertisement from The Chocolate Lady of Oyster Bay, New York.

News and Notes…..

News and Notes…..

Awards and grants sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) make up much of this edition of the “News and Notes” column and include the conferring of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department, and the annual research grants  from the American Museum of Natural History. The column also covers a reunion of the two branches of the Roosevelt family comprising the descendants of Theodore Roosevelt from Oyster Bay, New York, and those of Franklin D. Roosevelt from Hyde Park, New York. A letter from Elliott Roosevelt, a son of Franklin D. Roosevelt, to John A. Gable of the TRA recounts some shared episodes of Roosevelt family history, including Theodore Roosevelt’s role in Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s wedding and Theodore Roosevelt’s attempt to serve in World War I. “News and Notes” also describes the dedication of a rose garden in honor of Jessica Van Ausdall Kraft at Sagamore Hill, highlights the work of some of the TRA leadership, and promotes the publications of the TRA.

Two photographs of the rose garden ceremonies at Sagamore Hill, two from the luncheon for the Naval History Prize, and one of Theodore Roosevelt join a picture of both sides of the TRA medallion to illustrate the column.
