President Roosevelt congratulates Lawrence F. Abbott and his wife Winifred Buck Abbott on their automobile and wishes he could have attended the fair. Since he is writing for Scribner’s Magazine while in Africa, Roosevelt does not think he should write anything for The Outlook. He will, however, accumulate materials to write about for The Outlook at a later time. He recommends both Lawrence F. Abbott and Lyman Abbott read Holman Day’s article on prohibition, which he says shows the need for a local option.

Elisha Ely Garrison was shocked by Secretary Cortelyou’s letter about the committee not having funds to pay for his recent edition of The Roosevelt Doctrine, since Garrison considered it “a labor of love” and the publisher offered it to the committee at nine cents a copy. Garrison had no role in the publisher attempting to sell the book to the committee. Garrison is happy to compile another book of Roosevelt’s messages and speeches.

Robert Bridges tells President Roosevelt that his appendix about the wild turkey hunt will be there in plenty of time any time before August 1, and there is not any need for it until after he gets to Oyster Bay. Bridges also thanks Roosevelt for his courtesy in the matter with the Post Office, and conveys thanks and a message from his brother as well.

Sandham’s previous letter was left in his studio in Boston and he would like another letter to show to British publishers.

Theodore Roosevelt has received Kermit Roosevelt’s letter about visiting Sao Paolo, Brazil, and everyone was interested in reading about Kermit and Belle Roosevelt setting up their new home. The book about the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition has been sent to all members of the expedition through the Brazilian ambassador. Roosevelt describes the “delightful Xmas” at Sagamore Hill with all of his children, except Kermit, and three grandchildren. He reflects on the war and views Germany as “clearly ahead” and Austria growing stronger. Roosevelt admires German efficiency, which is greater than the efficiency of the Allies, and the Allies are infinitely more efficient than the United States. President Wilson and Secretary Bryan are the “worst creatures” to lead the nation in foreign affairs. Roosevelt believes the United States should have countered the “unscrupulous” behavior of Germany and intervened on behalf of Belgium. He has signed a three year contract with Metropolitan Magazine to publish his social and political views.

Historian Ray H. Mattison directs Superintendent Reid to a manuscript on the life of Mr. and Mrs. William Reid. He believes that the manuscript would make an excellent article for any Great Plains region historical society.

Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary tells Eleanore Osgood Leavens that Roosevelt has never written an article about Irish language and dialects. He refers Leavens to articles in The Outlook and The Century authored by Roosevelt.
