This section of the journal covers twelve topics including a brief report on the 1998 annual meeting which saw the conferring of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara Bush. It also highlights a revival of the play Bully! starring actor John Davidson, the results of a survey of historians rating twentieth-century presidents, and the opening of an exhibition on Theodore Roosevelt at the National Portrait Gallery. “News and Notes” also discusses whether Roosevelt believed in the legend of a Sasquatch or Bigfoot creature, relays news from the The Friends of Sagamore Hill cooperating association, and notes the launching of a Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) website. The section closes with a listing of the members of the executive committee of the TRA along with the members of the Board of Trustees classes of 1999, 2000, and 2001, and with a text box indicating that this issue of the journal is dedicated to P. James Roosevelt.

The Congressional Charter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

Congressional Charter for the then Roosevelt Memorial Association established in May 1920 that lists the original incorporators and includes some of the key provisions guiding the organization. These include stipulations that the association will be governed by a board of trustees; that its income will go only to further its educational goals; and that it will work to establish memorials to Theodore Roosevelt in Washington, D.C. and Oyster Bay, New York.

This abbreviated version of “News and Notes” contains listings of the Presidents of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the Woman’s Roosevelt Memorial Association. It notes that a made for television movie, The Rough Riders, will air in July 1997, and it announces that the TRA has an email account. The section also provides commentary on this issue’s cover photograph, and it highlights the work of Stephen R. Fox who wrote the lead article for this issue.

This edition of “News and Notes” reports on the annual awards supported by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) conferred by the American Museum of Natural History, the Roosevelt Study Center, and the Navy League of the United States. The section lists all of the winners of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize as well as the current judges. “News and Notes” also contains an article about the return of six pieces of china to Bulloch Hall in Roswell, Georgia. The section concludes with two pages of news about the TRA, including its adoption of email, fundraising efforts, and the various programs it supports. Two photographs, one each from the Roosevelt Study Center and Bulloch Hall, supplement the text.

This edition of the “News and Notes” section opens with a report on the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). The report notes the election of new members and classes of the Board of Trustees and of the TRA’s leadership for 1985-1986. The section also covers the TRA’s involvement in the Outward Bound program and the granting of the first Theodore Roosevelt Scholarship for that program, the results of the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public high schools, and the passing of Philippa Jeffries Roosevelt. 

 

The section also covers the “first scholarship conference devoted entirely to TR” at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, which was held in October 1985. It also notes new works on Theodore Roosevelt, a panel on Roosevelt’s foreign policy to be held at the meeting of the Organization of American Historians, and highlights the work of Frederick W. Marks and Serge Ricard on Roosevelt’s diplomacy found in this issue. The section closes with a notice that Edmund Morris has signed a contract to write a biography of President Ronald Reagan.
