An excellent 2020 TRA annual meeting in Washington, D.C., despite the pandemic

Gregory A. Wynn chronicles the 2020 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) at the National War College (NWC) in Washington, D.C. Wynn highlights the difficulties encountered and overcome with carrying out the meeting in the midst of a pandemic, and he praises the staff of the NWC for employing technology to allow for online participation. Wynn notes the various panels and speakers, and he lists the winners of various TRA awards from book awards to the USS Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Leadership Award, the Bertha B. Rose Award, and a special TRA Medal of Honor for Public Service to James N. Mattis.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) announces that David Architzel has been elected as the next President of the TRA, succeeding William N. Tilchin. The TRA also announces that its 2020 annual meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., and it reminds its members that a limited number of copies of Spotlighting TR: Selections from the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, 2007-2014 remain available for purchase. A text box lists the President and Executive Director of the TRA, along with those responsible for assembling its journal, guidelines for submitting manuscripts, and information regarding the governance of the TRA.

William N. Tilchin presents an excerpt from a letter he wrote to members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) upon the occasion of the end of his term as President of the TRA. Tilchin focuses on the work and legacy of John A. Gable, the long-time Executive Director of the TRA, and says that he remains focused on carrying out Gable’s work. On a separate matter, Tilchin notes that he erred in his characterization of a series of letters from Theodore Roosevelt to the Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park published in the Fall 2018 issue.

Boston 2015: A very memorable TRA annual meeting

William N. Tilchin gives a report on the 2015 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Boston, Massachusetts. Tilchin lists the planners of the meeting, and he dwells on the events held at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University and at the Algonquin Club in Boston. Tilchin describes the major events of the weekend, including the conferring of the TRA Boston Police Awards, the Saturday symposium, and the annual dinner. Tilchin highlights the symposium speakers and their topics as well as the winners of TRA awards presented at the dinner.

Thirteen photographs of some of the speakers, guests, and dignitaries at the meeting populate the report along with two other images from the events, and two menus from the Algonquin Club.

Theodore R. Kupferman and Dorothy Horton McGee obituaries

Obituaries for Theodore R. Kupferman and Dorothy Horton McGee which examines their careers and community service, especially to the Theodore Roosevelt Association, which Kupferman headed as President and McGee served as a member of the Board of Trustees. Kupferman’s obituary highlights his brief political career, his tenure as a Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and his work with the Layman’s National Bible Committee. McGee is remembered as the Town Historian of Oyster Bay, New York, for her numerous books, and her love of sailing.

Three photographs supplement the text. In addition to photographs of Kupferman and Theodore Roosevelt, a third picture shows five crew members of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, including three of its commanders.

Report on the 78th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. The report details the field trips, dinner, speakers, and elections that marked the weekend meeting. The report highlights the reelection of Lawrence H. Budner as President of the TRA, the address of William N. Tilchin, and the conferring of the Junior Officer Leadership Award for the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Jesse Shapiro, winner of the TRA Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools, also addressed the dinner gathering. 

 

Eight photographs of some of the assembled guests, speakers, and dignitaries, including four commanders of USS Theodore Roosevelt, populate the report.

This section of the journal covers twelve topics including a brief report on the 1998 annual meeting which saw the conferring of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara Bush. It also highlights a revival of the play Bully! starring actor John Davidson, the results of a survey of historians rating twentieth-century presidents, and the opening of an exhibition on Theodore Roosevelt at the National Portrait Gallery. “News and Notes” also discusses whether Roosevelt believed in the legend of a Sasquatch or Bigfoot creature, relays news from the The Friends of Sagamore Hill cooperating association, and notes the launching of a Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) website. The section closes with a listing of the members of the executive committee of the TRA along with the members of the Board of Trustees classes of 1999, 2000, and 2001, and with a text box indicating that this issue of the journal is dedicated to P. James Roosevelt.
