Theodore Roosevelt tried to have Stewart Edward White out for lunch with Carl Ethan Akeley and Delia J. Akeley. He asks if he can share White’s comments about the sable antelope with Edmund Heller. Roosevelt feels naturalists have gone to extremes in creating new species without evidence.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt thanks Henry Fairfield Osborn for the note and will look up the article in Science. Roosevelt believes his friend C. Hart Merriam has gone too far in announcing two new species of mountain lion. Roosevelt’s sister has enjoyed being with Osborn and the others at Woods Holl.

C. Hart Merriam sends President Roosevelt information he requested about the Biological Survey for use in Roosevelt’s message to Congress. Merriam just returned from a trip along the Mexican boundary. He learned that the Desert Bighorn is still common in the Colorado desert and that the mule deer sticks to the desert.

A. K. Fisher responds to Robert Bridges’s inquiries about squirrel species. Spermophilus annulatus does not occur north of Mexico, spermophilus armatus occurs in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains and Yellowstone Park, and the similar spermophilus elegans is found in Colorado. Citellus is the more commonly used generic word for spermophilus.
