Letter from J. Stewart Barney to William Loeb

He encloses a photograph of the model, apologizes for the quality of the photograph, and explains his design that symbolizes “the union of England and America.”

Ohio Senator Marcus Alonzo Hanna and President Roosevelt both have angel wings and sit beside each other with grumpy expressions. Hanna says, “Quit yer shovin’!” while Roosevelt replies, “Aw, back up!”

The two Herricks

On the left side, D. Cady Herrick is depicted as an angel. Caption: Herrick, the candidate. On the right side, Herrick wears a suit with a number of tags: “a desperate political operator” (The Sun), “an impropriety, a scandal,” (The Times), and “the associate of low and disreputable ward politicians” (The World). A “stuffed ballot box” runs after him and says, “You can’t lose me, D-Cady.” Caption: Herrick, the boss. The Angelic Herrick refuses to shake the hand of the political boss, who asks “What! Have you forgotten ME?”

“Take us like this”

President Roosevelt and a Republican elephant wear halos over their heads attached by sticks as Roosevelt holds “the olive branch of peace.” Beside him is a bucket with a sign that reads, “Roosevelt’s letter of acceptance whitewash.” The elephant has been whitewashed and has a sign that reads, “The whitewash on this animal is wet.” There is also a lamb with a sign: “We have adopted this beautiful little lamb.”

She’s all right

An angel labeled “National Credit” with wings labeled “Sound Financial Policy” and “Repeal of Sherman Silver Law” rises above the flames of the wreck of the “U.S. Treasury.” Among the wreckage lie William McKinley bowled over by the “McKinley Bill,” John Sherman being crushed under the weight of large silver coins, Green B. Raum sitting in an empty safe labeled “U.S. Treasury,” with Benjamin Harrison and Charles Foster hanging onto the safe, and William A. Peffer among the lumber on the left.

The wars that never come

A large group of children in a nursery are fighting amongst themselves. They are labeled “England” and “Russia,” “Austria” and “Italy,” “Greece” and “Turkey,” “France” and “Germany” fighting over a child or doll labeled “Alsace Lorraine,” “Roumania” and “Servia,” and in the background on the left, “Denmark” and “Sweden,” and “China” and Japan. The mother of the house, an angel labeled “Peace,” looks tired and exasperated. There is a dead bird in a birdcage hanging on the left. Caption: Madam Peace–Goodness, gracious! – were there ever such troublesome children? They are always promising to be good, and yet they are always squabbling!
