Letter from John Hay to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from John Hay to Theodore Roosevelt

Secretary of State Hay responds to a request from President Roosevelt, to advise whether a letter from Major Henry T. Allen could be published. Hay notes that he finds the piece well written, judicial, and fair. He notes that “if anything ought to be printed on international matters by a government official there is no special objection to this.” He notes that those in the east may not hear about it, if it is to be published in Outing magazine.

Aladdin and the wonderful lamp

A man seated in an alcove, wearing a hat labeled “Vested Interests,” holds a magic lamp labeled “Financial Backing” which he is polishing with his “Check Book.” On one side of him is a ticker tape machine and on the other is a hookah labeled “High Finance.” A gigantic figure, the “Editorial Genie,” is standing on the right labeled “The Reputable Press.” He is holding many papers in his arms, possibly news stories or newspaper headlines, some of which are crossed out and some inscribed “Kill.” The two men are unidentified.
