Gustavus M. Middleton reminds Theodore Roosevelt he sent Roosevelt a pamphlet titled Sketches of South Carolina. Middleton also recently published an article on the Civil War in the Charleston News and Courier, and received a letter from Roosevelt. The letter and pamphlet were both sent to John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Duke of Argyll and Middleton would now like to send the Duke a good description of the White House, if Roosevelt can point him in the right direction.

Samuel Strasbourger writes of the importance of this moment when President Taft has called a special session of Congress to deal with tariffs, reciprocity, and other big issues facing the nation. Strasbourger believes the Republican Party can continue to make the country and its people prosperous if they stick to Republican principles. Taft will need to continue to be firm and courageous, willing to be vilified to do what is right for the country.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Elbridge Gerry Dunnell

Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt writes journalist Eldridge Gerry Dunnell that there was an understanding that speeches from the previous night would not be reported in the newspapers and therefore Roosevelt had spoken more freely. However, a “garbled abstract” of his speech has appeared in the Washington Post. Roosevelt invites Dunnell to visit him the next day at the Commission Rooms.

She also expresses displeasure over showings of the opera Salome in Philadelphia from a few years prior and how the mayor of Philadelphia, John E. Reyburn, did not stop the performances. She claims that the literate African American population in Philadelphia agrees with these views. She hopes Roosevelt will visit soon.

Ferriss says since he is the Populist party national chairman, he is invested in these matters. He also mentions a speech Roosevelt gave recently in Osawatomie where he briefly mentioned finances and says these kinds of discussions must be discrete. He thinks they are living in good times and hopes to see everyone voting together.
