Theodore Roosevelt asks Spanish Ambassador Don Juan Riaño y Gayangos if he will pass on a book Roosevelt wrote about hunting in South America to the Duke of Alba, Jacobo Stuart Fitz-James y Falcó. “Alva,” as Roosevelt refers to him, stood in Kermit Roosevelt’s recent wedding to Belle Wyatt Willard in Madrid, where the elder Roosevelt enjoyed the company of King Alfonso III and Queen Victoria of Spain.

In a letter to Elihu Root (and possibly intended for a wider audience), President Roosevelt gives his perspective of his conflict with the recently-recalled Austrian Ambassador Bellamy Storer. Embedded within the letter are reproductions of private letters between President Roosevelt, members of his administration, and Storer. The letters detail the saga of the Storers’s push for Archbishop Ireland to become Cardinal and the fracturing of their friendship with the Roosevelts.

President Roosevelt sends an amusing telegram he received to Frederick W. Whitridge, Special Ambassador to Spain for the wedding of King Alfonso XIII. Whitridge appears to have made a strong impression on King Edward VII of Great Britain, and Roosevelt hopes that he got on well with German Emperor William II as well. Roosevelt asks Whitridge to “give my regards unofficially and heartily to Mrs. Whitridge; and much less heartily but more formally to the King of Spain.”

Ambassador Whitelaw Reid believes that the Kaiser-Tweedmouth incident seems to be closed and out of the mind of the public, and sends President Roosevelt a number of news clippings cataloging the incident. Reid remarks on a number of other subjects, including an upcoming visit by William Lyon Mackenzie King, his discussions with Edward Grey, and the declining health of Prime Minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman.

Ambassador Reid updates Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt on the visits of royalties to London, England, including the dinner held for German Emperor William II and his wife Auguste Viktoria. Reid raves about Auguste Viktoria’s dress and notes she wore the “biggest pearls I ever saw worn in any part of the world.” Reid also tells Roosevelt about the Bourbon wedding he and Mrs. Whitelaw Reid attended. The ambassador includes an anecdote about Spanish King Alfonso XIII who wanted to change his clothes, but his wife Maria Cristina told him he could not because the luggage had already left. Reid concludes by telling Roosevelt about a luncheon for the new Mexican minister and a dinner for the Alfonso XIII and Maria Cristina of Spain. Reid discusses his plans for a leave of absence, which will include stopping in New York.

Ambassador Henry White reports to President Roosevelt on a week he spent with King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. White and Emmanuel discussed international disarmament, about which both were skeptical. They talked about Vatican relations with many nations, especially Italy and France, and of how the Jesuits were involved. White also describes hunting ibex and shares that the king offered to send Roosevelt some ibex heads.

Railroad president Frederick W. Whitridge, who was appointed special ambassador to Spain for King Alfonso XIII’s wedding, writes to President Roosevelt about the festivities. He notes how the young men in the American group behaved themselves well, and how the Americans hesitatingly wore the insignia they were given to wear at the ceremony so as not to offend their hosts’ hospitality. Whitridge also includes the text of his short speech to King Alfonso, expressing the admiration and affection of the American people and specifically Roosevelt.
