Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Nevada N. Stranahan

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Nevada N. Stranahan

President Roosevelt shares with Nevada N. Stranahan, Collector of Customs in New York, that he feels Governor Frank Wayland Higgins is correct about suggesting John T. Mott as chairman of the New York Republican State Committee. He would have accepted several other candidates, but there would be too much opposition. Roosevelt will gladly back Mott and considers him ideal for the situation. He wants Higgins to take care of the matter immediately and asks Stranahan to contact William L. Ward and George W. Dunn.

Letter from Horace White to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Horace White to Theodore Roosevelt

New York Lieutenant Governor-Elect White tells President Roosevelt that he will take his role and the work it entails seriously. In particular, he is interested in work on the barge canal and good roads development, which he believes have been mismanaged. White and his wife would like to visit Roosevelt and his wife in Washington at the beginning of the new year. He celebrates the result of the election, and believes that many in the New York state Republican organization deserve praise for their roles.

Letter from Charles William Anderson to William Loeb

Letter from Charles William Anderson to William Loeb

Charles William Anderson reports on several members of the New York Republican State Committee’s opinions of President Roosevelt, Governor Charles Evans Hughes, and Secretary of War William H. Taft. The majority of the members have indicated that they would support Hughes’s run for president over Taft’s should Roosevelt not seek renomination, although Roosevelt would be their first choice. Anderson has heard some rumors among financial circles about an unnamed fourth potential candidate, but has not seen any support for him among the actual State Committee members.

Letter from William Austin Wadsworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William Austin Wadsworth to Theodore Roosevelt

William Austin Wadsworth sends President Roosevelt information on a friend of his, who comes with strong endorsements from Bell Weston Burton and S. Schofield. Wadsworth asks Roosevelt to tell Edith Roosevelt that he rode her favorite horse yesterday and thought of her. Wadsworth reports that James Wolcott Wadsworth, his representative in Congress, is sure of reelection, and does not care what his opponent Peter A. Porter does. Representative Wadsworth has said that the Honorable George Aldrich believes James Goold Cutler, the mayor of Rochester, can be elected governor and later become president. Wadsworth encloses a picture of Katherine Coolidge with Eleanora Randolph Sears.

The Republican evangelist

The Republican evangelist

Theodore Roosevelt is pictured as an evangelist preaching from “My Policies” in a tent with “Sherman, Cannon, Aldrich, Ballinger, Aldridge, Barnes, [and] Woodruff” sitting on the left, and “Depew, Lodge, [and] Odell” sitting on the right. “Crane”, who had been sitting on the right, has gotten up and is walking out. “Beveridge” is standing in the back at the entrance to the tent, and Dr. Abbott is next to Roosevelt, playing a piano. Across the tent hangs a banner that states, “Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour, but look out for the 8th of November.” Caption: And the sinners who won’t be saved.
