Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to James C. Martin

Following William H. Taft’s election as president, President Roosevelt responds to James C. Martin’s letter stating that many voters would not support Taft because of his Unitarian religion and perceived sympathy with Catholics. Roosevelt takes the opportunity to broadly state that he believes that the faith of political candidates is a personal matter that voters should not take into account. He believes that voting for candidates based on their religion violates the principles of religious freedom that America is founded upon.

Letter from Arthur von Briesen to G. L. Gillespie

Arthur von Briesen responds to Major General G. L. Gillespie’s request for further information on Briesen’s statement that he had gotten his facts regarding a sword supposedly gifted by King Frederick II of Prussia to George Washington from Mr. Ward. He has since come to believe that the story may be rather different, based on a book by Friedrich Kapp which says that the sword came from the sword-maker Theophilus Alte of Solingen. This is further reinforced by a letter from Washington to John Quincy Adams.

Presidents of the United States presidential campaign fan

Hand-held fan with printed music for the presidential campaign of 1908. The front of the fan illustrates all presidents from George Washington through Theodore Roosevelt. Oval photographs at top feature William H. Taft and William Jennings Bryan under the caption “Who’s Next.” The reverse side features a short notation of “The Star Spangled Banner,” arranged by George Braveson, with four verses. The lyrics for the rest of the verses are printed below the notation. The bottom of the fan has two advertisements. The first is an advertisement for Hill & Goodrich, “dealers in Fresh and Salt Meats of every kind.” The second is for “Fish and Oysters in Season. Cash paid for Hides and Skins, Portland St., Morrisville, VT.”

Letter from George Washington to John Quincy Adams with annotation by Worthington Chauncey Ford

In a portion of a letter, excerpted in Worthing Chauncey Ford’s Writings of George Washington, George Washington tells John Adams that he had read about a sword from an unknown Dutch maker that was intended for him, but pawned in Alexandria. He asks Adams, who is serving as a minister in Holland, to find out what he can about the sword. An annotation from Ford says that the sword was made by Theophilus Alte. Alte sent his son to give the sword to Washington, but the son sold it at a tavern and disappeared. The sword is currently in the possession of Alice Lawrason Riggs.
