The combined “Books” and “Book Notes” sections contain four lengthy reviews, a brief review essay, and a notice about five works related to the life of Theodore Roosevelt. It also includes a short excerpt from Roosevelt’s writings on conservation and a report by Wallace Finley Dailey on the status of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University. Christopher Volpe praises Edward Renehan’s biography of John Burroughs and highlights Burroughs’s friendships with Roosevelt and the poet Walt Whitman. Volpe notes that Burroughs was a very popular figure as a nature writer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, but that he fell into obscurity after his death in 1921.

John A. Gable admires the cartoons and commentary found in J. David Valaik’s Theodore Roosevelt, An American Hero in Caricature which reproduces forty-seven caricatures of Roosevelt found in the pages of Puck magazine. Gable also favors Caleb Carr’s historical novel, The Alienist, which revolves around Roosevelt’s tenure as Police Commissioner of New York City. Gable, deeply skeptical of fictional portrayals of Roosevelt, finds Carr’s treatment “entirely accurate,” and he notes how other characters that people the novel have roots in real persons.

James G. Lewis reviews Char Miller’s Gifford Pinchot: The Evolution of an American Conservationist and notes that the work challenges the established view of the relationship between Pinchot and John Muir. Lewis says that Miller is “writing revisionist environmental history” by providing a nuanced portrait of Pinchot. Some of the selections as well as some of the commentary found in Mario R. Di Nunzio’s Theodore Roosevelt: An American Mind are questioned by the anonymous reviewer.

Wallace Finley Dailey, Curator of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, provides a detailed update on manuscript and book additions to the collection; the use of the collection holdings by numerous authors; and the adoption of new computer based cataloging technology. Dailey also discusses fundraising efforts, exhibitions using the collection materials, and donations from members of the Roosevelt family. Photographs of Burroughs, Pinchot, Carr, and Valiak appear in the sections along with a view of the Theodore Roosevelt Gallery at Harvard.

In this edition of the “News and Notes” column, John A. Gable notes the publication of David McCullough’s study of Theodore Roosevelt’s family and Anna C. Roosevelt’s work on the prehistoric peoples of Venezuela. He acknowledges the contributions of those authors who wrote pieces for this issue of the Journal, and he details the research grants and fellowships awarded by the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund at the American Museum of Natural History. Gable also discusses the annual essay contest sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association at the New Rochelle, New York public high school.

Gable also reports on the association’s support of student essay and speaking contests, additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project. He closes with an assertion that the United States is “in the midst of what can be called a ‘Roosevelt revival'” given the rise in membership of the TRA and the publication of a number of significant works on Roosevelt in 1979, most significantly Edmund Morris’s The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

The article also says that a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt painted by George Burroughs Torrey at the White House had been donated to Harvard by Dr. Adelbert Ames. The article closes with a history of the Roosevelt Collection from 1919 to 1978.

Executive Director John A. Gable gives a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) during 1978. He notes an increase in both membership and contributions, and details the day-to-day work of answering phone and letter inquiries about Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to covering aspects of established programs like the student essay and speaking contests and support of research grants made by the American Museum of Natural History, he details the programs surrounding the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sagamore Hill as a public house museum, the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall, the home of Roosevelt’s mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, in Roswell, Georgia, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project.

Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, presenting a check to Emmett Rushin of the Roswell (Georgia) Historic Preservation Committee; the other is of Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) President Howard T. In the “Notes” column, John A. The room will house an extensive Theodore Roosevelt Collection donated by Paul C. Richards. The notice lists the speakers and gives a brief synopsis of their remarks. It provides background on Richards, describes the contents of the collection, and quotes from Richards’s remarks.

Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) John A. Gable provides an update on the various projects undertaken by the TRA in 1976 with an emphasis on the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt holdings at Harvard University. He notes the establishment there of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, and he gives an update on the revitalization project underway in the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site in New York City. Gable promotes the reissue of Roosevelt’s biography of Gouverneur Morris, and he lists the various clubs and organizations he spoke to in his role as Executive Director of the TRA. He notes the receipt of four letters from Roosevelt to William T. Hornaday which the TRA has added to the Harvard University Roosevelt Collection.

P. James Roosevelt and John A. Gable, President and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provide a detailed accounting of the TRA’s outreach and education activities for 1976. Many of these initiatives are covered in more detail in individual articles in this issue of the Journal. The two longest sections of the report cover the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, exhibits, and reading spaces at the Harvard University libraries and the project to restore the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City. The report also covers the annual student contests sponsored by the TRA, the research grants awarded by the American Museum of Natural History, and the publications, such as the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, produced by the TRA.

A listing of the officers of the TRA is included in the report.

John A.
