First day cover for a red 6-cent stamp featuring a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt. Postmarked New York, New York, on November 18, 1955. Along the left side of the envelope is a blue illustrated portrait of Roosevelt surrounded by red stars. Beneath the portrait is a shield with a blue top and a lower section with white and red stripes. “Theodore Roosevelt 26th President of the United States” is displayed on the shield.

The stamp is shades of purple and features the image of a steam ship sailing through the canal. The ship is flanked on the left by a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt and on the right by a portrait of George W. Goethals. At the top of the left side of the envelope is a yellow map of the path of the Panama Canal and at the bottom is an illustration of a steam ship sailing through the canal.

Panama Canal commemorative envelope and stamp

First day issue envelope and three cent postage stamps celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Stamp is purple with an illustration of a steam ship sailing through the canal in the middle. On the left of the ship is an illustration of Theodore Roosevelt and to the right an illustration of George W. Goethals. There are four stamps on the envelope cancelled with “First Day of Issue” and postmarked aboard USS Charleston, Canal Zone on August 15, 1939. On the left side of the envelope is a map of the waterways that make up the Canal Zone and an inset map of the Republic of Panama. Beneath the map is a brief description of the history of the canal from the beginning of the work by the French in 1880 to its completion in 1914. The envelope is addressed to Harry E. Cole of Tuolumne, California.

First day cover envelope authorized by the American Stamp Dealers Association and postmarked in New York, New York, on November 18, 1955. The six cent stamp is carmine with an illustration of Theodore Roosevelt and is part of the 1954-1968 Liberty Series. On the left of the envelope is a black ink illustration of Theodore Roosevelt and, to the lower right of the portrait, a battle scene with cavalry and artillery.
