Theodore Roosevelt corresponds with James A. B. Scherer, President of Throop College of Technology (later CalTech) on the subject of national defense and America’s entry into World War I. He references a book by one Mr. Maxwell, probably Charles Maxwell’s Causes and Battles of the Colossal War in Europe. He partially agrees with Mr. Maxwell that America should “keep our people on the Land” but states that above all “we must organize our defense.”
