Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to I. K. Russell

Theodore Roosevelt found himself genuinely interested in I. K. Russell’s letter, and connects Russell’s comments about church people standing by Edward Henry Harriman with Edward Alsworth Ross’s book, Sin and Society. Roosevelt wishes he could get people to “take a greater interest in real things” and create real social benefits, rather than “[wasting] their energies in howling for universal prohibition or universal peace.”

Theodore Roosevelt is outraged by what I. K. Russell has told him about The World and will write to Dr. Young at once to see what can be done. Roosevelt will also write a letter stating the facts, and he suggests that the association publicly denounce The World. Roosevelt does not think that he can do anything about The Times since they regard him as a “persona non grata.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to I. K. Russell

Theodore Roosevelt responds to a letter to The New York Times in which Robert M. Stevenson, president of Westminster College, quotes a passage from Pearson’s Magazine alleging that as President, Roosevelt made a bargain with the Mormon Church in exchange for electoral votes. The votes were allegedly given in exchange for an end to Republican agitation for an amendment allowing Congress to legislate regarding polygamy, the retention of Senator Reed Smoot, and patronage positions in accordance to the wish of the Mormon hierarchy. Roosevelt vehemently denies these allegations.
