Theodore Roosevelt requests that his father gather some plant specimens for his museum, particularly two pieces of supple jack of certain size. His favorite mouse, Brownie, was crushed. Nothing much has happened at home but the plants in the piazza are budding. This is a typewritten copy of the original letter.

Theodore Roosevelt suffered an asthma attack but has recovered and is in “perfect health and spirits.” He has recently taken a walk in the country, visited a beer garden, attended an open air concert, and shot air rifles. When not studying, Roosevelt has been spending his time translating natural history, wrestling, and cooking.

Corinne Roosevelt has arrived to stay with them for the summer. Theodore Roosevelt accompanied the Minkwitz family to a castle and a service at the German Reformed Church. His language studies are going well and the children have started a club that meets once a week. The boxing gloves are a “great amusement” and Roosevelt relates his “best round yet.” Elliott Roosevelt is the best boxer but Theodore would win “rewards” for bloody noses.

Theodore Roosevelt is undergoing a slight asthma attack but continues to study hard. He is enjoying his studies and believes he is making considerable progress. Roosevelt has also been boxing and adding to his various collections; 40 animals, 220 coins, and several German natural histories. The neighborhood children are amused by Roosevelt’s watch.

Theodore Roosevelt appreciates the many letters he has received from home. He also received a letter from his uncle, James Dunwody Bulloch. Roosevelt has kept his father’s first letter and will try to deserve his trust. He has not found it difficult to avoid drinking and smoking. Roosevelt requests a petition that will allow him to attend the local Congregational church and join a mission class. Initial college expenses have been heavy, but Roosevelt should not need to draw on his father’s finances until Christmas.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks his father for sending the petition that will allow him to attend church. The bag and clock have arrived but he will need several more books and the key to his bookcase. His room appears comfortable with the pictures hung and the knickknacks placed. Roosevelt attended a football game between the freshman team and Adams Academy. His studies are going well except the class “Theory of Determinants.”

Theodore Roosevelt is glad that his father enjoyed his trip and wishes that he would work less. Roosevelt’s own health is good, except a slight cold. Princeton defeated Harvard in football but it was a close game. There was around 2,000 spectators at the game, including several of Roosevelt’s Princeton friends.

Theodore Roosevelt has not heard of any new developments in the collector-ship case and fears that Senator Roscoe Conkling has won. Roosevelt is looking forward to the holidays. He plans to make the most of the break as the “next two months will be tremendous work.” Roosevelt will be preparing for the semi-annuals and the athletic contests.

Theodore Roosevelt asks if his father has received the letter he wrote in German. Everyone is happy that Corinne Roosevelt has arrived in Dresden. Roosevelt confronted an acquaintance who swore too much but he has made a new friend named Edward Jacobs. They spent yesterday boxing and swimming. He received a letter from Edith Kermit Carow and Anna Roosevelt who are doing well in Carlsbad.
