Theodore Roosevelt enjoyed visiting Corinne Roosevelt Robinson and her family. Roosevelt is attached to his ranch and feels that he is living in an “ideal hero land” that he finds powerfully appealing. He recently enjoyed the book On Both Sides.

President Roosevelt encloses ten dollars for Dora Watkins and asks Corinne Roosevelt Robinson to send it to her as a Christmas gift. Roosevelt wishes he could spend Christmas with the Robinsons.

President Roosevelt describes the family’s Christmas activities. Presents were opened in the morning with Alice Roosevelt Longworth and Representative Nicholas Longworth in attendance. Anna Roosevelt Cowles hosted lunch and the Lodge family visited for Christmas dinner.

Theodore and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt enjoyed the poem and look forward to lunch on Tuesday. Roosevelt enjoyed his evening with Frances Theodora Parsons and describes her son, James Russell Parsons, as a “gallant young Sir Galahad.”

Theodore Roosevelt and Alice Lee Roosevelt are enjoying their honeymoon. Roosevelt appreciated the Doree gallery but was “more amused than pleased” with the Aesthetes exhibits at the Grosvenor Gallery. Crossing the Irish and English Channels went well, and Alice was not even seasick. Getting a hat box through customs was difficult, but Roosevelt’s revolver and flask passed through easily.

Theodore Roosevelt relates the chase and capture of three thieves that had stolen his boat. The thieves were captured along the river and then Roosevelt took them overland to the sheriff in Dickinson, Dakota Territory. He read Anna Karenina during the trip and has mixed feelings about the quality of the book but enjoyed Leo Tolstoy’s writing style. Roosevelt requests that Corinne Roosevelt Robinson deliver some flowers to Edith Kermit Carow before Carow travels abroad.

Theodore Roosevelt offers some opinions on “legitimate campaign expenses.” In a postscript, he requests a particular type of “transparent soap.” Two pages are missing from the letter.

President Roosevelt limits himself to only appointing the sons of regular army and navy officers. He has refused all applications for grandsons, nephews, and adopted sons.

Zelie Mercedes Eberstadt Leigh offers to donate a letter written by Theodore Roosevelt to the Roosevelt Memorial Association. The letter was written in response to a letter sent by Leigh relating the time her sister, Esther, announced that she could no longer play with one of her friends because that girl’s father was not going to vote for Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his sister Corinne Roosevelt about his honeymoon trip through Ireland with his new wife, Alice. He describes sight seeing, rowing and eating.

Melza Riggs Wood Winthrop thanks Corinne Roosevelt Robinson for the gift, and regrets that she could not attend her wedding. She describes the farewell extended in the Philippines to William H. Taft as he ends his service as Civil Governor of the Philippines. She also extends New Year’s wishes.
