Theodore Roosevelt relates the chase and capture of three thieves that had stolen his boat. The thieves were captured along the river and then Roosevelt took them overland to the sheriff in Dickinson, Dakota Territory. He read Anna Karenina during the trip and has mixed feelings about the quality of the book but enjoyed Leo Tolstoy’s writing style. Roosevelt requests that Corinne Roosevelt Robinson deliver some flowers to Edith Kermit Carow before Carow travels abroad. Typed copy of original handwritten letter.

Theodore Roosevelt encloses a letter for his sister and writes that its recipient was pleased with her most recent poem. Roosevelt mentions that everyone he talks to about Douglas Robinson speaks about him with the highest regard. He writes that he is looking forward to a visit from Helen Roosevelt Robinson and her children and is concerned about the health of Anna Roosevelt Cowles. Roosevelt also mentions that Archibald Roosevelt and his wife, along with aviator Douglas Campbell, are coming to visit and reminisce about Quentin Roosevelt.

However, he mentions that she should not worry if there is a delay, as he has experienced telegram delays even with Mackay. Roosevelt writes that he enjoyed Theodore Douglas Robinson’s children and mentions his lunch plans with Edith.

He asks her to send the enclosed materials to her sons Theodore and Monroe and mentions how difficult it is for Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt to receive letters from Quentin Roosevelt. Roosevelt also mentions seeing Corinne Robinson Alsop and Joseph W. Alsop.

Theodore Roosevelt writes from his daughter’s home in Dark Harbor, Maine. He writes what a comfort it has been to him and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt to be surrounded by family and especially notes the bond between the grandchildren and Edith. Roosevelt mentions that Flora Whitney, Quentin Roosevelt’s fiancée, is with them and is particularly brave. He both dreads and cherishes the letters from Quentin that keep arriving in the mail.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his sister during a visit to his daughter, Ethel Roosevelt Derby. He describes his grandchildren and how they have been a comfort to him and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. Roosevelt writes about the deaths of Quentin Roosevelt and Stewart Douglas Robinson and the tragedy of death at such a young age. Roosevelt mentions that he and Edith do not wish to publish Quentin’s letters.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks his sister for her letter and poem. He has learned that Theodore Roosevelt and Archibald Roosevelt have landed in France, Kermit Roosevelt has been offered a position with the British army in Mesopotamia, and Quentin Roosevelt passed his flying corps examinations. Ethel Roosevelt Derby’s husband, Richard Derby, is also eager to be involved with the war, and Eleanor Butler Roosevelt will soon leave for France to do work with the Y.M.C.A.
