Vice President Roosevelt regrets that he will miss seeing Jacob A. Riis during the Tuskegee, Alabama, trip. He has been called to Buffalo, New York, because of the attempted assassination of President McKinley, but he believes McKinley will recover. Roosevelt agrees with Riis about does; he will not shoot them and has been surprised at how long a wounded deer can run.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt liked Richard V. Oulahan but “feel[s] like breaking his head” now that he stands between Roosevelt and Jacob A. Riis. He is glad Seth Low has been nominated but agrees with Riis that some of the Citizens’ Union need common sense. Roosevelt advises Riis on purchasing a gun for his son.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt was glad to receive Jacob A. Riis’s letter but has a Navy yard inspection on May 17 and cannot come. He will ask Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, but doubts he can attend either. Roosevelt wishes Riis’s family well and asks what Riis thinks Police Commissioner Frank Moss will do.
