President Roosevelt tells Major Jenkins he was glad to see the photograph of General Leonard Wood’s namesake, and wants to see a photo of his own “little namesake” even more. Roosevelt also asks him to thank the “gallant veteran in gray” for the photo of Confederate General Wade Hampton.

President Roosevelt appreciates Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue Jenkins’s letter, and promises to ask George B. Cortelyou, Postmaster General and Chairman of the Republican National Committee, to write to Jenkins. Roosevelt emphasizes to Jenkins that he should not allow any of Roosevelt’s friends nominate him for the presidency again, and that there must be an honest effort to find the best candidate. Roosevelt will not dictate who the candidate should be, but comments that for the Presidency, it is not bad to have “the office seek the man and not the man the office.”
