President Roosevelt asks Colonel Myron T. Herrick to come visit him at his convenience. Roosevelt was told of William McKinley’s intention to send Herrick to Italy, and plans to follow through on it. He hopes to learn, through Herrick and Secretary of State John Hay, what McKinley told the Ambassador to Italy, George von Lengerke Meyer, when he was sent there.

Theodore Roosevelt notifies Myron T. Herrick that his son-in-law, Nicholas Longworth, may run for Senator in Ohio. Roosevelt does not expect to influence Longworth’s decision but will support him if he runs. Should Herrick choose to run as well, Roosevelt will testify honestly to his admirable work as ambassador and admit that he would make an excellent senator.

President Roosevelt has heard that there are rumors that he is attempting to influence the Ohio Senatorial fight. He tells Myron T. Herrick that it would be unwise for his administration to assume any position in this contest, and suggests that the best course might be to delay any appointments and have William H. Taft’s administration make them once Taft takes office.
