President Roosevelt writes to his nephew, William Sheffield Cowles, and hopes that he is feeling better. At the suggestion of his children, Roosevelt includes several little drawings for Cowles depicting a day in the Roosevelt household.

President Roosevelt thanks his nephew William Sheffield Cowles for the file stand he sent for Christmas. He wishes Cowles were in Washington, D.C., for the holidays, as Ted, Kermit, and Archie are all present and they have a great tree. Archie is playing on the football team and Quentin has asked for an incubator in the White House.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks William Sheffield Cowles and his mother, Anna Roosevelt Cowles, for the “beautiful silver cheese-scoop.” He wishes that Cowles was at Sagamore Hill to play in the old barn and swim. Quentin Roosevelt has a new toy sail boat and is swimming well.

Theodore Roosevelt and his family are concerned about William Sheffield Cowles’s health and hope he is feeling better. At Kermit Roosevelt’s suggestion, Roosevelt is sending a “picture letter” which his children always enjoy. The drawings illustrate some events from Roosevelt’s day.

Theodore Roosevelt enjoyed William Sheffield Cowles’s letters and was interested to hear about his electrical and mechanical experiments. The hunting has gone well and Kermit Roosevelt is a better hunter then his father. Roosevelt has written to Cowles’s mother, Anna Roosevelt Cowles.

Theodore Roosevelt encourages William Sheffield Cowles to “make good” on his first few difficult months at school. A gentleman must be educated and be able to “hold his own among other gentlemen.” Roosevelt is proud of Cowles and wants him to “work hard and play hard at school.”

Theodore Roosevelt appreciates the pencils and has already been using one. Archie and Quentin Roosevelt have been “chopping trees” with their father and still have their arms and legs.
