Roosevelt appreciates the honor and wishes for the support of every Independent but he could not head a ticket designed to overthrow members of the Republican party.

Roosevelt goes on to say that he could not accept the Independent nomination for governor of New York because he is already on the Republican ticket and it would put him against his own men.
