Spermophilus annulatus does not occur north of Mexico, spermophilus armatus occurs in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains and Yellowstone Park, and the similar spermophilus elegans is found in Colorado. Citellus is the more commonly used generic word for spermophilus.
