Theodore Roosevelt asks Daniel Moreau Barringer to see him in New York to discuss various matters. He thinks that the things Barringer is discovering about the crater are the most interesting in modern scientific discovery, but he cannot take an effective personal interest in it at present.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks Daniel Moreau Barringer for the receipt of a copy of his address on a meteor crater, presumably referring to a crater know as Coon Mountain Crater located in Arizona. Roosevelt remarks upon his lack of knowledge on the subject of planetary scientific theory, namely the Chamberlin–Moulton planetesimal hypothesis, and his surprise that a meteor impact could form a crater of enormous size.

President Roosevelt thanks Daniel Moreau Barringer for the offer of his bear gun, which he would accept if he were not already taking all the rifles he could to Africa. He agrees that Charles Denby is “a fine fellow,” but believes that William Woodville Rockhill will be retained as the American minister to China.
