Eliza Raybould Allan wishes she could have talked more with Vice President Roosevelt at an event in Colorado Springs. Allan would have traveled to see him speak again but she is poor and could not pay her fare. Allan is also interested in the writing Roosevelt has done on Oliver Cromwell, as she was born in England and lived in the places Cromwell traveled. Allan is trying to raise money to buy a house and asks Roosevelt to find subscribers to help her.

Gifford Pinchot regrets not having a letter for the Denver meeting of the American Forestry Association but understands Vice President Roosevelt’s position. Pinchot and Frederick Haynes Newell are exploring some grazing and irrigation issues and will be leaving for a two week trip to the mountains. Although Pinchot expects to miss his hunt, he hopes he and Roosevelt have a “good visit, with lots of exercise.”

Foraker will try to get General Dick, Governor Hook, and Senator Hoar to praise Roosevelt in connection with important meetings and places, and asks Roosevelt to let him know if he has any particular time and place in mind for such meetings or recognition.

Hamlin and Charles Eliot Norton, that criticized the government’s colonial policy, particularly with regard to the Spanish American war. Hutchinson is concerned because these charges come from such eminent people, and says that their statements need a public response.

James Bryce will be traveling through Mexico and the West Indies in the fall. After Mexico, he hopes to visit Cuba and requests an introduction from Vice President Roosevelt to the commander of American forces in Cuba and the admiral leading the American squadron. He is also interested in meeting with anyone Roosevelt would like to suggest. The situation is poor in England and the “calamitous” South African War has been “abominably mismanaged.”
