Mrs. Charles L. Morehouse implores that Theodore Roosevelt pay attention to the plight of “many old soldiers” who are “deprived of their daily comfort and live in obscurity in their old age.” Morehouse feels as though “patriotism” has vanished from society, with war veterans required to cover the costs of flags to decorate graves—”that sacred duty that belongs to the American people, who have enjoyed the fruits of their labors and sacrifices for their country.” She invites Roosevelt to attend and speak at a memorial service at “Mount Victory” in Cypress Hills Cemetery.
